Ireland Here I Come!! A Compilation of Thoughts About The Trip - Day One...Travel & Arrival - Before the FAM Begins

February 3, 2017 @2:07 pm

I'm off to see the wizard, the wonderful...no, wait, I'm not headed to Emerald City but to the Emerald Isle! Look out Dublin, Limerick, Cashel, Cork, Killarney, Foynes, Adare, Bunratty and Offaly because here I come!

As shared from my Facebook posts, be warned my friends, for instead of political banter and heavily skewed opinions your feed may be interrupted for some beautiful scenery and images throughout the next week. I'm sure you'll be sad to see them instead of the muck and mire from left and right, but it's my job and I have to report on what is going on in the world. 😎 Note: I am going to be only posting on Facebook during this trip but will be compiling what I post here into a few entries with multiple segments pieced together.

I made it! I'm all checked in at my hotel, ready to go enjoy my first breakfast. The room is beautiful, and the bed is calling my name after not much sleep on the plane, but I'm also hungry and want something to eat. Today is an "adjustment/free" day, so I'll take a little rest and then head down to find something to eat before some exploration on my own. The official FAM begins tomorrow.

I'm out exploring the city with the Hop-on, Hop-Off bus. Here is just a glimpse of the beauty within St Patrick's Cathedral.

Right across the street from the cathedral is the St. Patrick's Cathedral Choir School.
Founded 1432...that's an old choir school! And fun fact about the choir school...the most famous student of the choir school was also kicked out in just 6 months...and that is Bono.

I was excited to be able to photo document the inside of St Patrick's, unlike when I was in London and was forbidden from doing so inside Westminster Abbey. Both historic churches are beautiful, and neither are ones that I can return to often, so it's nice to be able to have some imagery of my own to jog my memory later on of my visit to St. Pat's. Sadly I can't say the same of Westminster. I'm still learning all of the different settings on the camera the family gave me for my birthday, so some are better than others, and probably junk to my photographer friends, but I'm learning. Here are some of the images I captured today.

A little glimpse from the bus ride around Dublin. It's a neat city with many distinct areas. I loved riding through Phoenix Park... Central Park in NYC could fit twice inside the Phoenix, it Hyde Park in London could fit six times inside the Phoenix! It's such a beautiful place.

A few of the sights from my tour around Dublin this afternoon. It's a really beautiful city, with many diverse areas, architectural styles, and some very rich history.

And finally (though I took these photos before heading out on my little self-guided exploration), there is the Gibson Hotel where I'm staying for the first couple of nights. It is a sleek, contemporary property in a formerly rundown industrial part of Dublin that the city is working hard to revitalize. New shops, restaurants, movie theaters, an arena venue, and a light-rail line are just steps from the hotel's entrance that have turned this once industrial part of the city into a chic, cosmopolitan area with high demand. (Finding Queen and King-size beds in Ireland is not easy, but this hotel has them). I'm loving this hotel, even though it's only "home" for two nights. Monday we move on to the South and West of the country, away from the contemporary and on to the more traditional Irish way of life.
