December 5, 1901 – Chicago, IL … It ALL Started with Walt

Walter Elias Disney is born to Flora and Elias Disney in their two-story cottage at 1249 Tripp Avenue in a newly developed section of Chicago, Illinois.  (The Disney family will move in April 1906 to a farm in Marceline, MO where Walt and his brothers and sister grew up.)

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Shrinking Audiences and Dancing Christmas Lights


November 24, 1994 – Walt Disney World – Lake Buena Vista, FL

Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, a new multi-media 3-D movie experience, has an official opening at the Journey Into Imagination pavilion in Future World at Epcot.  The new film replaced Captain EO, and has already been running in “soft openings” for the last few days.

November 24, 1995 – Walt Disney World – Lake Buena Vista, FL

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights brightens Disney-MGM Studios for the very first time. The  overwhelmingly positive reaction from Walt Disney World guests will turn the park's Residential Street Christmas display into a yearly tradition.

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Disney's All-Star Music Resort


November 22, 1994 – Walt Disney World

Disney’s All-Star Music Resort opens at 1801 West Buena Vista Drive in Walt Disney World. It is the second phase of the All-Star Resorts.  (The first was All-Star Sports).  It is located on the southern portion of the resort’s property, west of World Drive (in what would eventually become the Animal Kingdom area).  This newest value level resort is divided into 5 areas: Calypso, Jazz Inn, Rock Inn, Country Fair, and Broadway.

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Pirates of the Caribbean

October 31, 1966
Disneyland - Anaheim, CA

Water is filled for the very first time in the flume of Disneyland's newest (and Walt Disney's last) attraction, Pirates of the Caribbean, still under construction in the all-new land, New Orleans Square, personally dedicated by Walt a few months earlier in July. (Walt's untimely death December 15, 1966 precluded him from ever experiencing the finished attraction which opened to the public on March 18, 1967).

Walt Disney World is officially dedicated by Roy O. Disney, Walt's surviving business partner, and Mickey Mouse, in the Magic Kingdom's Town Square.  A Grand Opening parade featuring a 1,076 piece marching band works it's way up Main Street, U.S.A. led by the "music man" himself, Meredith Wilson, composer of the famous piece, "76 Trombones."

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Ticket Books

October 11, 1955
Disneyland - Anaheim, CA

Ticket Books are first introduced at Disneyland.  "A Day at Disneyland" booklets offering guests 8 exciting attractions for one low price is a brand new-concept in the theme park industry.  Adults are just $2.50, juniors are $2.00 and children are $1.50, and each booklet includes 3 A tickets, 2 B tickets, and 3 C tickets, good for attractions throughout the park.  (D tickets would not be introduced until a year later, and the famous E tickets debuted in 1959).

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Disneyland Hotel

The Disneyland Hotel officially opens across the street from Walt Disney's original Magic Kingdom, Disneyland.  The hotel is owned and operated by the Wrather Corporation (Jack Wrather is a good friend of Walt's, invited by Walt to build and operate the hotel with the license to the Disneyland name,  and the hotel will not become officially part of the Walt Disney family until the 1988 acquisition by The Walt Disney Company).

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Captain EO and Hong Kong Disneyland


September 12, 1986 – Walt Disney World

Captain EO, an all-new 3-D fantasy sci-fi musical movie attraction opens at EPCOT. The film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, stars Michael Jackson, and was produced by George Lucas.  Set in the future in a far off galaxy, the 17-minute film tells the story of Captain EO and his ragtag crew of space travelers, and features an eclectic cast of characters, including other notable actors and actresses, including Dick Shawn and Angelica Huston.  EPCOT is the first Disney park to present the film – it will open at  Disneyland in California just 6 days later, and later followed by Tokyo Disneyland in 1987).


September 12, 2005 - Hong Kong Disneyland

After nearly 6 years of planning, preparation and construction, Hong Kong Disneyland debuts.  It is the company’s 5th vacation resort, and the 11th Disney theme park in the world.  The park was closely modeled after the original Disneyland in Anaheim, CA which opened 50 years (and 2 months) earlier.  In honor of the original Magic Kingdom, Hong Kong Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle was built to match the Anaheim original.  The theme park and its’ adjoining hotels, retail, dining and entertainment facilities stretch out over 310 acres on Lantau Island – and the park features the largest Adventureland of any Magic Kingdom park around the globe.

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Morocco Pavilion Debuts


September 7, 1984 – Walt Disney World

Morocco debuts as the first new international pavilion to be added to Epcot’s World Showcase since the park opened in October 1982. The pavilion is situated between Japan and France, and is the first pavilion to be sponsored by a national government instead of a corporation.  The King of Morocco sent royal craftsmen to do all of the carvings, paintings and hand lay all of the tile work through the pavilion, which recreates the architectural styling and atmosphere of Casablanca, Fez, and Marrakesh.

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Aulani Opens


August 29, 2011 – Oahu, Hawaii

At approximately 6:30 a.m., Hawai'i time, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa opens its' doors and the first guests enter. Disney's first resort in Hawaii, is located on the leeward, or west coast, of the island of Oahu, in the Ko Olina resort area.  It is about 10 minutes from Pearl Harbor, and about 20 miles west of downtown Honolulu.  The resort is comprised of a unique mix of "mouse-inspired" imagineering and Native Hawaiian culture on the approximate 21 acre ocean-front parcel it occupies.  It is a blend of traditional hotel rooms and Disney Vacation Club villas.

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular


August 25, 1989 – Walt Disney World

The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular attraction is dedicated at the Disney-MGM Studios in Florida. It is the first theme park attraction to use a computer based show control system in conjunction with a programmable logic controller system to trigger, control and sequence complex live events in real time ... in many cases controlled by the actors! The 30-minute stunt show recreates some of the most thrilling and heart-pounding moments from the Indiana Jones films.

August 18, 1956 - Disneyland

Carnation Plaza Gardens opens at the end of Main Street, U.S.A., in the Plaza Hub next to Sleeping Beauty Castle. An outdoor bandstand and dining location, it will become a popular site for dancing, musical performances and "Date Night at Disneyland".

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - Alice in Wonderland


August 14, 1958 - Disneyland

The grand opening of Fantasyland's newest dark ride attraction, Alice in Wonderland, is hosted by Walt Disney himself along with Mouseketeer Karen Pendleton - dressed as Alice.  The attraction is the first dark ride to cover two floors, as the queue is located behind the neighboring Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, and the majority of the attraction takes place above Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

Today in Disney Parks and Resorts History - The Haunted Mansion


August 9, 1969 – Disneyland

The Haunted Mansion opens in New Orleans Square. The grand opening of the attraction is heralded by a promotional blitz that include the "I Scream" Sundaes sold at Disneyland's Carnation Plaza Gardens.  The attraction's opening has been long-awaited, as the exterior facade was first built in 1963, but sat dormant as Walt and the Imagineers' attentions turned to the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, and Walt's untimely death in 1966 brought about further delay.
