stopher's theme park adventures - Father-Sons Adventure to Star Wars Weekends - May 2009

This past week marked the 10-day period prior to our next trip to the World.  Yes, that's right, we're heading south once again, going to Walt Disney World.  I'm getting pretty excited.  It's been over a year since the entire family was there together.  I've made two, or is it three, solo visits down there since our last family excursion... it's time for the whole bunch to be there together once again.  We'll be staying at Kidani Village, at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. We have a 1 bedroom, Savannah View, villa, and I've already done our online check-in. Fun stuff!

This is going to be another No Parks trip for us.  Our first such trip was last year - the last time that we were all there together - though on that trip we did go to a water park.  But there are so many things to see and do at WDW, that you don't HAVE to go to theme parks.  Sure they are the primary draw for guests, but I mean really, with 43 square miles - there's a lot to see and do without ever stepping in the parks.  Plus the entire family is pumped about being able to sleep in.  We're at the stage in life, with 2 active teens, and 1 getting active elementary aged child, that we're on the move constantly going here, there and everywhere. The entire summer this year has been filled (will continue to be filled) with one activity or another - many of which taking one, two or more family members away from home for a night up to a week at a time.  This ONE WEEK where we're going to be in Florida is the ONLY week where we will ALL be together at the same time, for the entire time.  So way back in the early spring when we figured that out - we grabbed this reservation, deciding it was better to get away together - than be at home together and ultimately allow the temptation of friends pull our teenagers away from home for this, that, or whatever.

So we're looking forward to sleeping in, hanging out in the room, playing games (regular, wii and whatever the Community Hall has), exploring other resorts, checking out the horses at Fort Wilderness, exploring Downtown Disney in a non-rushed manner, heading over to the Atlantic for a beach day... and whatever else suits our fancy.  There are other activities that we could do - several I've discussed previously in the blog - and we might do them, but we might not.  We're pretty much going to take each day as it comes with NO AGENDA.  Whatever we do, it will be nice to just be together.  Time with our eldest at home is fleeting now, as he prepares to begin his Junior year of high school, and soon enough prepares to head off to college.  We're grabbing the moments that we can and savoring them before life changes again.

This past week was also the Fourth of July - Independence Day.  It's been very, very hot and dry here in Central Indiana, so our county banned all private fireworks for safety precautions.  While somewhat sad, I was pretty pleased that they made that call.  Just days prior to the decision, a grass fire was ignited in the common area behind our house... just about 4 houses away from our house. How did it begin?  By carelessness with fireworks.  The burned patch was pretty big too.  When I walked my daughter out there to take a look at it the next day, I commented to her that it was larger than her bedroom, she replied, "No daddy, it's much bigger than my room!"  We were both amazed at the size of it, but of course fire spreads - and quickly.  So there were no fireworks at our house last week.  The boys were bummed, my girls were sad for no sparklers - but all in all, it was ok.  Plus we'll have the opportunity to watch fireworks in just a little over a week now.  We've decided one evening - whichever it ends up being I cannot say yet - that we'll try to watch the fireworks either from the Top of the World lounge at the Bay Lake Tower (since DVC just opened up that perk to any DVC member staying on points at any DVC resort for a limited time), or from the beach at the Poly.  We've never done either... so we'll see which one works out for us.  (I've watched the fireworks from the ferry dock at the TTC before... but the family has only ever seen them from inside the Magic Kingdom).

The BIG thing for us on Independence Day was going to the movies.  That is really not something that we do all too often, simply because of how expensive the whole experience has become - but from time to time we do it.  But an Independence Day Movie has become somewhat of a tradition for us.  This was the 4th year in a row that we've done that, but sadly this year we separated and went to two different films.  While I wanted to see The Avengers with the boys and my wife, neither of us felt that that movie was appropriate for our daughter.  Julie had been watching all of the other Marvel action hero flicks with the boys in preparation for The Avengers, so she went to see that one, and I took Annie to see Brave.  It was a good flick - I think it would have been better as a mommy-daughter venture, but I did enjoy it.  I most loved spending time with my daughter.  She's very much into Daddy right now... so I'm soaking it all in while it lasts.

Coming up this week on Wednesday - the 2013 resort reservations will be available at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland.  Plus it is highly rumored that a new round of Free Dining at Walt Disney World will be made available for the late fall months in 2012.  It's shaping up to be a good week for vacation planning.

And now, it's time for another installment in stopher's theme park adventures (the continuing entries of trip report narratives originally posted over on the DIS boards).  This time we go back in time to May 2009, when I took my boys on a Father-Sons Adventure, for Star Wars Weekends at the Walt Disney World Resort.  We had a great time on that particular weekend in May, though both boys were a bit disappointed in that the events at Disney's Hollywood Studios were not Star Wars "enough" for their liking.  Neither one cares for the "Clone Wars" adventures that have been released in the past few years, and were very disappointed that any part of that was included in the weekend events. They WERE both very happy to have gotten Peter Mayhew's autograph, however.  The autographed pictures still hang in their respective spaces at home.

Tuesday Trivia - Bay Lake Sand

The white sands of the resorts surrounding Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon at Walt Disney World all came from the bottom of Bay Lake.  During initial site work, Bay Lake was emptied by many pumps, and a bottom layer of root structures, silt, muck and debris was dredged out - over 7 million cubic yards of earth were removed (and later used to build up the base of the Magic Kingdom more than 14 feet).  Underneath all of that muck and mire were thousands of tons of pure white sand, which was removed, cleaned, and relocated to line the more than 4 1/2 miles of beach that surround the 172 acre man-made Seven Seas Lagoon and neighboring Bay Lake.

Friday Family Fun - Horseback Riding & Carriage Rides

Did you know that in the midst of the world's largest themed vacation destination - filled with theme parks, water parks, excellent golf courses and beautifully themed hotels and resorts - you can take a relaxing break in the scenic natural woodlands and enjoy a wholesome, family fun filled horseback ride?  Or a relaxing trail ride?

Tri-Circle D Ranch, found at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is home to the draft horses used to pull the trolleys down Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom Park.  The horses, when not working in the Magic Kingdom, and a few farm animals are on display for guests to come and visit.  There are also pony rides for small children from 10 am to 5 pm for around $5. Other horses fill out the Ranch's stables, and provide relaxing 45 minute guided trail rides for guests looking for the horseback riding experience.  The trails weave in and around the surrounding forests of the Fort Wilderness Resort.  It is a very enjoyable way to spend part of a day.  Parking at Fort Wilderness is free for the day, and transportation back in to the "Settlement" area where the Ranch is located is available by simply boarding one of the internal Fort Wilderness Resort buses.

In addition to horseback riding, carriage rides are offered at the Fort throughout the year, with seasonally themed rides are offered for Halloween and Christmas.  During the fall months, be sure to check out the chilling sights and sounds of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, as narrated by your carriage driver.  The ride itself is a nighttime ride through the woods, lasting about 25 minutes.  This ride is generally offered between September 30 and October 31, 2011, weather permitting.

The other seasonally themed carriage offering will help get you in the Christmas spirit with an enchanting, horse-drawn sleigh ride. This 25-minute is offered nightly throughout the month of December, weather permitting, and takes you through the secluded natural beauty surrounding Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

Today in Disney Parks & Resorts History - Space Mountain

January 15, 1975 - Walt Disney World

Space Mountain opens in Tomorrowland at the Magic KingdomThe grand opening includs a band of 2,000 high school students, fireworks and the release of 50,000 balloons. The first official ride is taken by Colonel James Irwin, the pilot of the Lunar Module on Apollo XV. Originally conceived by Walt Disney himself for Disneyland in the 1960's, the technology did not yet exist.  Seeing a need for more thrilling attractions at the new Florida resort, Disney imagineers set about shortly after the Magic Kingdom opened to bring Walt's dream to life. The success of the attraction in Florida prompts the Imagineers to design a Space Mountain for Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland.

Also opening in the Magic Kingdom is the Carousel of Progress, relocated from Disneyland.  The attraction traces nearly 100 years of innovations in electricity. The Carousel originally premiered at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, with an innovative rotating carousel where the center stage remains stationary and the audience rotates around it between the various show sequences.

Tuesday Trivia - Haunted Mansion / Carousel of Progress

Did you know that the Carousel of Progress and The Haunted Mansion are connected?  Not literally, but they do share "someone" in common. The ghostly figure of a woman rocking in a chair during the ballroom sequence in The Haunted Mansion was created using the same mold as the grandmother from Carousel of Progress.

Today in Disney Parks & Resorts History - Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

November 8, 1980 - Walt Disney World

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially opened in Frontierland, despite having operated in soft opening status since September. The attraction marks the second "mountain" at the Magic Kingdom. (It is also the second Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction, following the 1979 opening at Disneyland in California).

Magical Mondays - Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom - 2012... You Just Interested Me

So I was just reading through the Disney Parks Blog for interesting things to post on my Facebook page, and saw that Yzma & Kronk will be included in the list of n'er-do-wells that will populate this new interactive game throughout Magic Kingdom Park next year.  That is so cool. I've never gotten into Kim Possible, nor have my kids, but this one seems like one that we might try - if only because of Yzma & Kronk!  We absolutely LOVE "The Emperor's New Groove" - and have often discussed what kind of cool attractions could be added to the parks based on those amazingly fun characters. Just think of it - an "Yzma's Secret Lab" coaster?!?  I would LOVE that, provided of course they don't slap tacky, over-sized earrings on each guest as they go careening downhill!  That film just cracks me up time and time again. I have driven cast members nuts before searching for Yzma pins to collect. There aren't many.  A few. But not many.  I'm glad to see that they will be used in the park, even if only for a virtual, interactive game.

Tuesday Trivia - The Haunted Mansion

The Haunted Mansion was the first attraction completely built, installed and ready to entertain guests at the Magic Kingdom when the park opened in October 1971. This was due to the fact that in 1969, when the imagineers were building the attraction at Disneyland, decided that the new attraction would be included in the Florida park's opening attraction roster and built duplicate sets and props. Those duplicates were then stored until they were needed for installation in Florida.

Today in Disney Parks & Resorts History - Pirates of the Caribbean

October 31, 1966 - Disneyland

Water is filled for the first time inside the flume of Disneyland's upcoming new attraction - Pirates of the Caribbean (which would open in March 1967). Pirates of the Caribbean was the last attraction personally overseen by Walt Disney, and is located in the first, entirely new land added to the park since Disneyland opened in 1955 - New Orleans Square.

(Pirates of the Caribbean, while not included in the original attraction roster for Florida, would later be added to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 1973).

Today in Disney Parks & Resorts History - Magic Kingdom Grand Opening Celebration

October 25, 1971 - Walt Disney World

24 days after the Magic Kingdom opened in Central Florida, Walt Disney World is formally dedicated by Walt's brother and lifelong business partner, Roy O. Disney.  Standing beside Roy during the dedication in Town Square is Mickey Mouse.  A Grand Opening parade featuring a 1,076-piece band, led by "The Music Man" Meredith Wilson himself (composer of "76 Trombones") goes down Main Street, U.S.A.  The event is filmed for television broadcast 4 days later.

Tuesday Trivia - Roy O. Disney Builds Walt Disney World

Following his brother Walt's death in December 1966, Roy O. Disney raised $400-million, and over the next five years built Walt Disney World, opening the new resort in October 1971. Through a series of convertible and common stock issues, the funds raised ensured the company was debt-free at the time the resort opened.
